January 1st may be the first day of the new year, but January 2nd can be the first day of the new you! When creating your new years resolutions for 2013, consider improving your work-life balance with these resolutions for small business owners.
Get found. The task of promoting and marketing your business should be top priority but often gets bumped as urgent issues pop up. Stop procrastinating. Pick something that’s proven to be effective for your business and get in the habit of doing it regularly—and consistently. Not sure where to start? Try some of these low cost marketing tips for small business.
Give back. Find a cause that means something to you and your business. Show the world (and your customers) that you care and contribute what you can (time, money, ongoing support). Use social media to help promote a worthy cause. There’s no better way to establish goodwill for your business.
Work smarter, not harder. Don’t get bogged down by all those routine tasks. Every time you’re doing a repetitive task, ask yourself…Is there a better way to do this? Can I delegate or hire someone to do it? Each step truly necessary? Is there some sort of technology or tool I can use to automate this? Once you have a process that works well, be sure to document it so you don’t forget.
Schedule “me” time. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It also drains his energy and makes him a less effective business owner. Don’t be Jack. Schedule time in your calendar to do the things you enjoy and stick with it. No room on your calendar? Find a way to streamline tasks (see Work smarter, not harder above) and shorten or eliminate meetings (long, unproductive meetings are so 2012). Invest in a healthy work-life balance. It’s what successful entrepreneurs do.
Try something new. Just when we think we know it all, things change. That’s okay. Learning keeps the mind sharp and makes life more interesting. Whether refreshing a skill or networking and meeting new people, make an effort to step out of your comfort zone from time to time. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll gain and how much clearer your road to success will become.
